The Burton A. Harris Insurance Agency has always supported our local communities in different ways, from volunteering at local relief centers during disasters to raising over $10,000 for individual teachers purchasing desperately needed materials for classrooms in the Los Angeles area.
Today, our agency turns its community service efforts to help disadvantaged and underserved students in our COVID-19 challenged world. To raise money to fund unlimited internet for our local high school, CHAMPS.
The Technology Gap
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted us all mentally, physically, and emotionally — especially our students. With many schools 100% online, underserved students are without the necessary internet or data to stream lessons, attend Zoom lessons, or complete homework. And we want to do something about it, starting locally.
We want all students to succeed. To start, we have partnered with CHAMPS Charter High School in Van Nuys, CA, as it reflects what is happening to other public charters in the underserved areas across Los Angeles. CHAMPS along with its rigorous academics, specializes in the arts, media, and performance curriculum. In order to be taught remotely, this requires large amounts of additional internet data which is not included in subsidized programs. As a public charter they already receive $5,828 less per student state government funding compared to traditional public schools. We believe in these students. With your help, we all can help them succeed in their goals, even in a pandemic.

With your help, we’d like to raise 10 thousand dollars to fund unlimited internet for 171 students per semester at CHAMPS, with 30 thousand to fund unlimited internet for the entire year.

We wish we could help all underserved students everywhere, but this is just a start. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
